Duas Barras – Brazil

Coruripe, Alagoas, Brazil

2008

Duas Barras is a former sugar cane farm bordering the Atlantic Ocean, located on the north east coast of Brazil. Situated outside the town of Coruripe, Alagoas the site measures approximately 200 hectares. Its defining physical characteristics are its year-round temperature of 24.4 degrees Celsius, its banded texture – proceeding from sandy aquamarine beachfront, to coconut grove, to cliff, and to elevated sugar cane field – and the Posim River, which borders it to the south.

The project comprises 40 villas, a hotel, and a stand-alone destination of programmatic elements yet to be defined. Of primary importance to the client is the creation of place (given the contemporary state of the resort – i.e., they are everywhere and have become a generic rearrangement of programmatic elements) and appeal to a highly specific clientele.

The project is set up as a curatorial one, with practitioners and thinkers being appointed as master planners and leaders of specific components, and teams and sub-teams assembled.
